What is ScarAway Scar Repair Gel?
ScarAway Scar Repair Gel is a gel made from 100% silicone for scar treatment. You can use it to heal various types of scars, such as hypertrophic scars and keloids caused by injury, surgery, burns, and cosmetic procedures. It works on both old and new scars by using a patented Kelo-cote formula that forms into a waterproof sheet within minutes after you put it on. The sheet is flexible, breathable, lightweight, with no distinct odor.
One tube contains 10g or 0.35 oz of gel that can be used for a 90-day treatment of a scar 3-4 inches in size. The gel is proven to soften and flatten raised scars, while maintaining moisture and elasticity of nearby skin. Other benefits the gel has is it reduces redness and helps to ease your itching.
What Are the Ingredients?
This gel simply contains 100% silicone gel made from polysiloxanes and silicone dioxide. There are no other ingredients involved, which means that it is free from any filler components that don’t bring any additional benefit.
How Do You Use It?
The directions for using this gel is to apply it 2 times a day. Make sure the scar is clean and dry before you put on the gel. Apply it in a very thin layer and give it some time to dry. Once it is dry, you can put other creams or lotions on top of it, such as sunscreen or makeup. The resulting layer of gel is clear and mostly invisible – it won’t be more noticeable than your scar.
It’s recommended to use the gel for 60-90 days for best results. Don’t let the gel come into contact with your eyes, mucous membranes, or any areas that are still open wounds. You can’t use the gel if you are experiencing other skin conditions that ruin the integrity of your skin. If you aren’t sure whether you’re allowed to use this gel or not, talk to your personal dermatologist.
There are no significant side effects based on customer reports. The gel doesn’t burn your skin or make it peel. The most common complaint is that the gel takes a long time to dry and that it can stick to your clothes if you don’t let it dry before doing any activities. One customer reported that their skin broke out in a slight rash and that the gel made their skin itchy throughout the day.
Does It Really Work?
This gel is one of the most popular products for diminishing scars. To get a better picture, here is a short summary of several customer reviews that show the results you can expect by using this gel:
- A customer reported that their scar became totally flat and no longer a bump after only a few days of using the gel
- One customer used the gel on her new, 1 week old scar and within 2 weeks the scar was gone
- A customer used the gel on her 10 year old tummy tuck scar, and within 2 weeks the scar had smoothed out and are almost flat
- One customer used the gel to heal keloid scars on her body, and after less than 1 month it was gone
- One customer was glad to report that her post-thyroidectomy hypertrophic scar has flattened out on each side after only 6 weeks of using the gel
- One customer reported that her skin looks normal after using the gel for 8 weeks to remove a 1.5 inch scar.
- A customer used the gel for her breast surgery scar and after 2 months it was gone
- Another customer reports that her daughter’s surgery scar looks so much better (significantly less purple) after using the gel every night for 3 months
As you can see, based on customer reports, you can expect results as fast as a few days or as long as 4 months. Your results may vary because every person has different skin and different recovery speeds. Make sure to follow the directions above and use for at least 90 days to get the best results.

I have a burn scar from a lighter on my arm. Something stupid I did when I was younger. I currently rub a bit of Bio-Oil on it daily. Is there something that can get it go away.
Hi Elfie, how is the scar after you rub Bio-Oil on it? Has it decreased? The brand we review here, ScarAway, can help with burn scars. But each scar may require different lengths of time to heal. Hope you heal quick!
I got some of the gel in my eye and my vision now seems clouded. Help!
Wash it promptly with a lot of water. If it does not get better, immediately seek a professional assistance by a dosctor.
I did something stupid and accidentally scratched my face, and then at night in my sleep I scratched same spot when it itched…it’s about the size of a pimple…flat….healed…but red. For 6 weeks. No pain. Can this product help reduce the redness? Is this common to have redness? Or am I stuck with this scar forever? It’s very prominent. Make up covers it since it’s flat….but did I just ruin my life? Or will it fade?
Hi, Ryan!
This is a silicone gel, so, yes, it will improve the appearance of the scar *both the color and the texture. But if the scarring is that major problem for you, I’d suggest a formula, specially developed for the removal of facial scars (the skin covering the face is way more sensitive and prone to imperfections, compared to the body skin).
Plus, you better use something, providing sun protection, as the scar will change its color during the period of treatment.
You can check our acne scars section – all the products available aim to remove facial scarring.
Hope this helps!
Best of luck!
How do you take the scar away gel off before putting more on?
Dear Mrs. Thompson,
The skin should be clean and dry before reapplying the product. You can simply wash the area with lukewarm water and apply the next layer.
Hope I was of some help!
hello i went through a mole removal laser surgery around 20 days back my doctor has given me a silicon gel named hexilak with vit e but it dosnt seem to be working as the skin from where the moles were removed from my face looks like a hole and have turned dark in color ..please suggest me the best cream or gel or ointment which i can use to flatten and de color those surgical facial scars
Hi Shantanu,
On our website, you can find thorough information regarding a similar formula – NewGel Plus E. This analysis represents all the positive.negative features of the formula, you can see the effect of the ingredients it contains on the skin, before and after photos and other useful details.
We recommend this particular product, as it has helped many to improve the appearance of very deep, severe scar formations, it has a great reputation and the ingredients combined are clinically tested.
You mentioned that the wart removal left ‘holes’ on your face, which is a common effect following such procedure. What is more, these holes and pigment spots may leave permanent scarring on the skin if left untreated, so you need to arm yourself with patience and regularly apply the treatment chosen in order to avoid such consequences.
Hope I helped and best of luck!
I made a mistake and have multiple flat brown scars on my thigh area, it is very embarrassing to wear shorts now. Will scaraway gel help fade the color where it will be less noticeable? If not please tell me what I can do to fade the color
Hi Natasha,
ScarAway is a fairly successful product for scar management. Silicone treatment is the only method with clinically proven beneficial effects on the improvement of scars. ScarAway is developed to reduce the discoloration and flatten the surface of the area affected.
If your scars are newly-formed, the optimal effect of the treatment will be available within a couple of weeks but if the marks are very old, you should not expect them to fade that fast. A prolonged treatment will be needed, it may take several months of regular application of the product.
Hope I helped!
Best of luck!
Hello!
I have some dark spots on my arms and cleavage. The arms’ one are from a mite that bite me a couple of months ago and the ones on my cleavage are from a light burn (and also the mite) and the skin there is a bit darker and with some spots.
Also, on my legs, I have a scar that is about 1-2 months old (I fell down).
They are all cicatrized but they are dark. Do you think this cream can do a big improvement?
Thank you very much for your help:)
Hi Caroline,
The appearance of the dark spots you mentioned can be successfully improved by applying anti-scar products, containing skin lightening ingredients. Such are usually available in acne scar formulas (as acne leaves dark brownish or reddish marks on the skin surface). Kojic or/and Lactic acid, silicone compounds etc. Remember that you may need to be persistent in order to obtain an optimal effect of the treatment.
The scars on the legs will be the easiest target, as the skin is not that delicate. The overall performance of ScarAway is fine, considering patients reviews, price aspect and ingredients list, so yes, the formula will certainly improve the condition of the scar tissue.
However, the most successful formula still remains NewGel Plus – you can see the improvements patients posted Online, the clinical studies, proving the benefits of the treatment and all the product features you might find interesting..
Hope I helped!
Best of luck!
I got lots of scars when I was a child, now I’m 15yeears and is embarrassed about them. So let’s says the scars are 10years old,van scaraway help diminish them. Please tell me or give me another good product yo use
Hi Vanessa,
10-year-old scarring is hard to treat. However, you are currently in your teen years when tissue regeneration is accelerated. This means that is very likely that your scars fade within the next few years.
ScarAway will help to the point that it will even out the skin surface and will reduce discolorations but you shouldn’t expect miracle results, as the scarring is very old i.e. the damage cannot be completely undone.
Also, there is a similar product, NewGel Plus, which appears to be very beneficial in the treatment of older scar formations, you can see lots of before-and-after images, clinical studies and in-depth info about the formula on this website.
Hope I helped!
BEst of luck!
My daughter who is 1.8 years old was accidentally scratched by our dog and her upper lips was lacerated by the dog’s paw. She had plastic surgeon sutured her upper right lips. Doc gave her dermastix ultra but there is still the sutured scar and a bit hard. The sutured was last Jan 18, 2019. Can you suggest what best scar gel I can let her try.
Hi Kathie!
I’d suggest consulting a dermatologist before choosing another treatment for your daughter. Children’s skin is very fragile and can get easily irritated. Unfortunately, most scar removal products do contain ingredients that may provoke reactions on the delicate skin.
This is why the best thing for you is a consultation with a professional – he or she will choose a formula with less aggressive ingredients, check for potential skin reactions or allergies.
Hope I helped!
My husband had surgery for skin cancer on his nose. He is going the Scar Away gel and we have noticed that the color of the color is getting darker. Is that normal?
Hi Sheryl!
Was ScarAway prescribed by the doctor who performed the surgery?
It is not unusual for a scar to become brownish during the treatment process. However, I’d suggest consulting your surgeon. Skin cancer is a serious condition and the proper post-operative care is crucial.
I scraped me shins while doing a box jump. Can I put silicone scar sheet right away? The cut happen about 2 hours ago.
Hi Alis,
I don’t recommend applying a scar sheet to an open wound. The treatment process may start after the wound has healed.
